Addis Ababa’s nightlife has grown into one of the most varied scenes in East Africa, mixing rooftop lounges, live music venues and late-night restaurants across a handful of distinct districts. Whether you’re after a relaxed hotel bar or a night that goes until sunrise, here’s where to go and what to expect.
Bole Road: The Heart of the Action
Bole Road and the streets around it are the center of Addis Ababa’s nightlife. This is where you’ll find the highest concentration of bars, lounges and late-night restaurants, many of them within walking distance of each other. It’s also the most convenient area if you’re staying at one of the hotels covered in our Addis Ababa hotel guide, since most nights out start within a few minutes of your room.
Kazanchis and the Live Music Scene
For something more cultural, Kazanchis is known for its azmari bet — traditional Ethiopian music houses where live singers perform call-and-response songs, often with audience participation, alongside local food and drink. It’s a completely different pace from Bole’s bars and lounges, and worth experiencing at least once.
Rooftop Lounges and Hotel Bars
Addis Ababa’s altitude means most evenings are cool and pleasant, which is exactly why rooftop bars are so popular here. Several of the international hotels covered in our hotel guide run rooftop lounges with skyline views over the city — a good option if you want a quieter, more upscale evening.
Getting There and Back Safely
Ride-hailing apps are the easiest and safest way to move between venues at night, especially if you’re not familiar with the city yet. See our full transportation guide for details on taxis, ride-hailing and the light rail.
Planning Your Night
